EL-246 is an antibody that recognizes a common epitope on both E- and L-selectin, effectively limiting recruitment of white blood cells to inflammatory sites. It falls into a similar category as Centocor's RemicadeÆ or Immunex's EnbrelÆ in that the inflammatory response is attenuated prior to leukocyte involvement. EL-246 has been thoroughly tested in a variety of large animals including three primate studies, with excellent results comparable to steroid medications but without the side effects. Clinical indications include pulmonary inflammation (e.g., Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, which affects approximately 15 million people in the United States) as well as cardiovascular inflammation associated with angioplasty, coronary artery bypass surgery or reperfusion injury following an ischemic event.
